Practicing your technique on a pad, tapping your feet on the floor and understanding rhythm are all steps towards perfecting your craft as a professional drummer. Arm yourself with the proper tools to better your talent on a daily basis.
Here are a few tips from Charles Davis!
Listen to all styles of music, even if it is not your favorite. Playing stylistically does not require you to master the style; you just have to understand what you are playing.
Learn all 40 of the International Drum Rudiments. Then experiment with some of the Hybrids. Applying rudiments to your set playing can create some interesting musical phrases.
Learn how to play Jazz! “If I could do it all over I would have started there”. Jazz is the gateway to 4 limb independence.
When playing "match grip” you want to keep your palm face down with your thumb on the side of the stick. Keeping your forearms and wrist parallel with the floor will maximize full range of motion
Warm up before you play. Try to develop exercises that warm up both hands and feet. “Your gig starts from the first note of your warm up”. - JoJo Mayer
Client Testimonial-
I cannot say enough how pleased I have been with the quality and productivity from my Drum Instructor Charles Davis. Charles has been with the Nashua School District including his role as a drum teacher for the Elementary Instrumental Lessons Program and my Drum Instructor for the Nashua South High School Band Program for many years and has proven to be a teacher that I trust implicitly. He not only gives his heart and soul to every lesson regarding musical content but delivers his message with his deep passion for learning. Charles is an invaluable member of our music staff and Nashua should consider themselves lucky to have him!!
Respectfully, Tony Courounis
